About Dear Producer
I launched Dear Producer in May 2018 with the simple goal of spotlighting the incredible work of film producers and educating the industry on what it is we actually do. I built a modest website, signed up for MailChimp, set up social media accounts, and started publishing interviews with some of my favorite producers. There was no five-year plan or thoughts about monetizing. I just wanted a project of my own. One that wasn’t reliant on A-list talent or financiers to make a reality. A project that wasn’t driven by someone else’s vision. I wanted to create something that was from my own voice and that supported the amazing community of producers I am fortunate to call my friends who were feeling unseen, unheard, and unappreciated. And so I created Dear Producer.
Since 2018, Dear Producer has organically grown to be a place that not only highlights the amazing and often impossible work of producers, it also provides invaluable resources and advocates for sustainable practices for all filmmakers, and brings to light issues important to artists at different levels and points of their careers.
Dear Producer has organically grown to over 6,000 subscribers since 2018. What started as a place just for producers, is now a community of all kinds of film lovers - emerging and veteran filmmakers, influential industry leaders, entertainment media, festival organizers, and more. By moving my platform to Substack, I hope to continue to grow the Dear Producer community and support more filmmakers as they build their own creative path.
How often will I receive a new issue?
Dear Producer is focused on long-form content and filmmaker resources that take time to compose. Because of this, Dear Producer runs on an intentional publishing schedule that is not driven by pressure to publish every week. When you get an email from Dear Producer, you can trust that it was thoughtfully crafted, that it reflects the current moment, and was created to support you on your journey.
Why should I pay for Dear Producer?
In the film community, we talk a lot about sustainability, but often want things for free. As a paying subscriber, you will be supporting the many hours of labor that goes into publishing an interview, essay, or new resource for filmmakers. By supporting the sustainability of Dear Producer, you are creating a place where thousands of filmmakers can learn and grow and create their own sustainable path. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
Dear Producer knows that we all get too many emails. My goal is to make each one you get from Dear Producer worthy of your time and the dollars you spent supporting my work.
I’m so happy to have you in the Dear Producer community,
Rebecca Green
